Ordinations: 15 August 2018

August 18, 2018

On the glorious Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady, 15 August 2018, His Lordship Bishop Alfonso de Galarreta, First Assistant of the SSPX, was present at Holy Cross Seminary to confer the subdiaconate and the minor orders.

Most notably, a Nigerian seminarian, Rev Mr Martin Anozie took the step into the first of the major orders, with its implicit perpetual vow of celibacy, in the presence of 11 SSPX priests, 6 SSPX nuns, and nearly 100 faithful. Rev Mr Anozie is the first Nigerian subdeacon of the SSPX. The previous day, on the Vigil of Assumption, Rev Mr Anozie, a fifth-year seminarian, made his perpetual engagement into the Priestly Society of Saint Pius X.

Bishop de Galarreta conferred the minor orders of exorcist and acolyte on 2 Filipino seminarians (Mr Daniel Yagan and Mr Cyril Alolaya). His Lordship also ordained three new porters and lectors: Pius Kim of South Korea, Mikhail Del Rosario of New Zealand, and Phillip Mujic of Australia.

It is interesting to note that Pope Pius VI suppressed the subdiaconate and the minor orders, in his decree Ministeria Quaedam, exactly 46 years previous to the day's ceremonies, on 15 August 1972, even though those orders go back to the earliest days of the Church, as his decree notes. We may rightly wonder if these traditions would have been found anywhere in the Church today, if they had not been maintained in the past 46 years by the Society of St Pius X, and especially in the years following their suppression.
